The most responsible stage of moving is preparing for it. Unlike traveling within the country, you won't have the opportunity to come back to your hometown at any time to finish things, update documents, check the iron, and so on. Fortunately, most of the paperwork can be done by your authorized representative.

Power of Attorney

A document that allows another person to perform almost any operation on your behalf is called a general power of attorney. In order for this power of attorney to have legal force in most countries, it must be notarized.

The authorized person is granted the right to manage and dispose of all types of your property, conclude any transactions, and perform any legal actions, so it is worth issuing it to a person you have no doubts about their reliability.

The next step you can think about is insurance.

Insurance

In Georgia, like in most other countries, foreigners can only buy insurance by paying for the whole year in advance (except for Unison, where there is an opportunity to pay monthly). If this does not suit you, you can buy traveler's insurance in your home country. Traveler's insurance is usually possible for a short period of time, but it will be enough to protect yourself from unforeseen expenses in the beginning, consider further steps, and calmly deal with Georgian insurance programs.

Document Collection

Take with you originals and copies of all important documents, including:

  1. Identity documents (passport, foreign passport, ID card, birth certificate);
  2. Marriage certificate;
  3. Work and tax documents (tax ID, social security number, employment record book);
  4. Insurance documents (health insurance policy, traveler's insurance);
  5. Certificates of no criminal record, no debts, 2-NDFL;
  6. Vaccination certificate;
  7. Military ID, military registration certificate;
  8. Driver's license, vehicle documents;
  9. Powers of attorney and/or their notarized copies;
  10. Education documents (for grades 9 and 11, diplomas, certificates, qualifications);
  11. Employment contract, bank statements.

All documents must be translated into English - this can be done in Georgia, but it is much easier and cheaper to do it in your home country.

Apostille

An apostille is an international standardized form of confirming the authenticity of documents for their use in foreign countries. In many countries, apostilles have been abolished and documents are accepted without them, including in Georgia. However, if you plan to leave Georgia or move further in the future, you need to take care of them in advance.

According to the Hague Convention, its members decide who can affix apostilles. In theory, they can allow consulates to affix them. It is also worth noting that usually personal presence is not necessary for apostille. That is, another person can affix the apostille for you (without power of attorney).
