The Tbilisi TV Tower is used for television and radio broadcasting, as well as for placing mobile communication antennas.

The tower is located on Mount Mtatsminda. The height of the tower is 275 meters, and with the height of the mountain, its upper point is located at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level, which allows it to receive any radio frequencies in Tbilisi and its surroundings.

The tower is decorated with customizable garlands, which allows it to be lit up in different styles. This lighting is mainly used for flags of countries during various events.

The tower itself is a column with two "supports." At a height of approximately 75 meters, there is a room (which is currently not in use). It is impossible to get to this room or to the tower itself - it is fenced and guarded.

History

The first TV tower in Tbilisi was built in 1955, the same year that the Georgian Television Center was created. However, in 1972, the tower burned down completely.

A new tower was built on the site of the burned down tower, which still stands to this day. In 1991, during the civil war, the tower received minor bullet damage, but continued to function.

The new tower, like its predecessor, survived a fire - in 1994, at a height of about 100 meters, a fire broke out during welding work. Fortunately, the transmitting equipment was not damaged, only the cables burned. New cables were laid in a day, and the tower resumed broadcasting.

Plans

Currently, the Tbilisi City Hall plans to turn the TV tower into a tourist attraction. In 2018, a project was presented for the arrangement of the tower and the surrounding area. It is planned to open a restaurant and an observation deck on the tower itself.

The current room will likely be converted - the restaurant will have a panoramic view, and a high-speed elevator will also be built. An Estonian company that implemented a similar project in Tallinn in 2012 won the tender.

Unfortunately, the work has not even started yet. According to the mayor of Tbilisi, the implementation of the project has been delayed due to the pandemic.
