The capital and largest city of Georgia. The population of Tbilisi in 2022 is about 1.2 million people. It is the cultural center of the country, where an active life takes place.

Tbilisi has a rich history dating back more than 1500 years. The city was founded in the fifth century and has been the heart and soul of Georgia ever since. Originally, the city was called Tpilisi (Old Georgian tpili - warm).

After joining the Russian Empire in 1845, the city was renamed Tiflis. Only in 1936 was the city renamed to a name closer to the original - Tbilisi.

The Legend of the Foundation

In 458, the territory of the city was covered with forests where King Vakhtang I Gorgasali hunted. Once he shot a pheasant (deer) and sent his falcon to catch the game.

Then the stories diverge:

According to the first version, King Vakhtang waited for the falcon to return, but not seeing it, he went in search of it. He stumbled upon hot springs while walking through the forest, and there he saw the pheasant and falcon that had been boiled in the springs.

According to the second version, the wounded deer crawled to the springs, healed with the water, and ran away.

King Vakhtang was so shocked by what he saw that he ordered a city to be built around these springs and named it Tbilisi.

A Mix of History and Modernity

One of the main attractions of Tbilisi is its historic center known as Old Tbilisi. Here you will find narrow cobblestone streets, old houses with wooden balconies, and numerous churches and cathedrals. The Metekhi Monastery, located on a hill overlooking the Kura River, deserves special attention. Its beautiful architecture and historical significance make it one of the most popular places to visit in the city.

Modern Tbilisi is represented by skyscrapers, trendy restaurants, world-class hotels, and bustling shopping streets. Here you will find a variety of shops, galleries, theaters, and clubs that reflect the dynamic lifestyle of the city. Various festivals, musical events, and exhibitions are held in the city, which attract the attention of both locals and tourists. Despite modern changes, Tbilisi has amazingly preserved its uniqueness and national flavor.

Health and Pleasure

Tbilisi is also famous for its thermal springs. One of the most famous is the sulfur baths in the Abanotubani district. These baths have a long history and are a popular place for relaxation and rejuvenation. Legend has it that it was around these springs that King Vakhtang ordered the city to be built. Guests can enjoy hot mineral baths and massages, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of traditional Georgian culture.

Georgian cuisine also deserves a separate mention. Tbilisi offers a wide selection of restaurants and cafes where you can try authentic Georgian dishes such as khachapuri, khinkali, and, of course, Georgian wine.
