Signagi is a city in eastern Georgia, part of the Kakheti region.

The name of the city comes from the Turkic word "signakh" (signak), which means "fortified place", "shelter", "fortification". This is not surprising, as Signagi arose on the site of a Georgian fortress on a hill near a cliff.

The fortress dates back to the 13th century and was built by King Irakli II to defend the city against the raids of the Lezgins. The city was inhabited mostly by craftsmen and merchants, as it is located at the intersection of profitable trade routes.

Little is known about life in Signagi in the 19th and early 20th centuries - the city fell into decline.

What about the city now?

Now it is the only fortress in Georgia that has been preserved in its original form. At the moment, 28 towers have survived, the entrance is free only to a small part of the wall, but you can still admire the views of the Alazani Valley. In 2005, as part of tourism development, a large-scale reconstruction of the city took place - the streets were paved with stone, the roofs - with tiles. As a result, a very cozy town with an Italian atmosphere was created.

What is the city famous for?

Nowadays, Signagi is known as the city of love.

There is a belief that the famous Georgian painter, Niko Pirosmani, who was born here, covered the whole square in front of the windows of his French beloved, Marguerite de Sevres, with flowers, selling his paintings and shop for this purpose. According to legend, the girl went out into the street and kissed Pirosmani firmly on the lips. But unfortunately, Marguerite soon left for France and never saw the painter again.

Pirosmani also dedicated to her the painting "Actress Margarita." In 1968, after the artist's death, the painting was exhibited at the Louvre, where an old woman came and stood near the painting for a long time, and then burst into tears. The old woman turned out to be Marguerite de Sevres herself.

The song "Million Scarlet Roses" by Alla Pugacheva is dedicated to this story.

Nowadays, there is a monument to Pirosmani in Signagi.

At the moment, there is also a round-the-clock registry office in the city, where anyone, even foreigners, can get married in one day. During the day, everything works as usual, but if you suddenly want to get married at night, it is better to call and make arrangements in advance.

What can you do?

Nowadays, Signagi is becoming more and more touristy, and it is simply pleasant to walk around here.

There are several wineries in the city, and vineyards are grown.

Two kilometers from Signagi is the Bodbe Women's Monastery, where the relics of St. Nino, the enlightener of Georgia, are kept.

There is also a small historical and ethnographic museum with a view of the Alazani Valley.

How to get there?

It is not difficult to get there from Tbilisi: you can take a minibus from the Samgori metro station, which will take up to 2 hours, or you can take a taxi or your own car.

Thus, Signagi is a cozy, old Georgian city worth visiting when you come to Georgia. You will be pleasantly surprised by the road, the ascent to the city, the fortress, the views of the Alazani Valley, and the compactness of the city.

Thanks to the fact that Signagi is located in Kakheti, the weather here is comfortable all year round, but it is best to come in the fall. Autumn is the time of wine, and Kakheti is its homeland.
